In a recent appearance, star Jude Law stated he “didn’t fear any repercussions” for portraying Vladimir Putin in a new film. This production, though, may align so closely with the mythologized version circulated by Russian state media that, within Russia, it functions as a endorsement rather than a critique.

The Manufactured Superhero

Over a long period, the Russian political apparatus and its pop-culture machine have worked together to craft a tailor-made persona of the president. This figure is an infallible strategist devoid of flaws, an ex-intelligence officer reimagined as a local 007 who always knows more than he reveals.

Cinematic Reinforcement

One recent example is a TV series launched last fall, helmed by a Kremlin supporter. The protagonist is a invented blue-eyed lieutenant colonel selected by fate to “rescue” the nation from disorder. Although the character's name Mikhail, the implication is clear: the hero must be a known figure from the secret services.

Western portrayals often end up reinforcing this same narrative rather than debunking it. An adaptation based on a popular book sets out to subvert the leader's mythology by presenting him as a symptom but as a consequence, shifting the narrative weight to the political machinery around him.

The Fable of the Hesitant President

In the film, the president is presented as having been picked by influential figures to stabilise the country because he is “a fit former intelligence agent”. They visit him and practically plead him to become president. His response is that he would rather govern from the background, seeking enduring influence.

This tale is a key piece of state propaganda: the cool, reluctant strategist guided by fate. In reality, none of this took place.

The Reality of the Casting Call

No one ever begged him to accept the role. The position was in essence a casting call with many contenders. At the centre to this process stood a powerful businessman from the previous administration who expected to run the country in practice.

• The shortlist included various figures, including a reformer subsequently assassinated and a former spy chief.
• According to an expert who studied Putin’s biography, the chosen candidate simply fitted the necessary criteria: loyal, from the security services, and not a communist or a liberal.
• A property developer familiar with the process stated the key criterion was controllability and faithfulness, not strength.

Constructing the Spy Legend

Analysts concur that the notion of Putin as a powerful KGB spy was constructed retrospectively. Claims about his clandestine activities in Dresden do not stand up to scrutiny. Fundamentally, he was an administrator and routine duties, a low-level clerk not engaged in actual agent work.

Curiously, the shift to framing him as a “spy” could partly have been inspired by Daniel Craig’s arrival as 007. His harder version led Russian media and social media to draw visual parallels with their leader. Edited images replacing the actor's likeness with Putin’s appeared on city centers, fueling the growing tendency to frame him as a Russian 007.

A Diplomatic Opportunity?

Given the casting, an actor well-liked by Russian audiences, the authorities will not miss the opportunity to frame his casting as a minor diplomatic triumph. The film's exclusion of public dissent, the political rivals, or prominent activists from its narrative, even though it includes the past decade, is a welcome aspect for state propaganda.

Domestically, the president is frequently an omnipotent figure who remains unseen on screen. He is signaled through photographs or orders from on high. In this new film, he at last gets a recognizable face—one that could unintentionally echo the very myths it might seek to examine.
