American Military Conducts Lethal Attack in Pacific, Resulting in 4 Fatalities
According to a senior military spokesperson, the US military carried out a fatal strike on a vessel in the eastern Pacific, killing four people.
“A US joint task force conducted a lethal kinetic strike on a vessel linked to a terrorist group in international waters. Surveillance confirmed the vessel was transiting along a established drug smuggling route and was involved in illicit drug transport. All four male drug traffickers were eliminated, and no American forces were harmed.”
Context and Prior Strikes
This announcement follows a day after a declaration regarding a blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers to and from Venezuela. In that announcement on social media, the US president alleged Venezuela of using oil revenues to fund narcotics smuggling and criminal activities, pledging to increase the military buildup.
Just on the previous day, the Pentagon stated it had carried out strikes on three boats it accused of trafficking drugs in the Pacific, leading to the deaths of eight people. Since 2 September, over 20 military engagements have killed at least 99 people, the majority off the coast of Venezuela.
Administration Defends Tactics Amid Pressure
The administration has encountered growing pressure to release video of a 2 September vessel attack. However, officials have refused to do so. The administration has supported its efforts as a successful operation, arguing it has prevented drugs from entering US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is exceeding the limits of lawful warfare.
Although the administration has said the operation is about stopping drugs destined for the US, remarks from a top official appeared to suggest a wider geopolitical aim. In a recently published interview, the chief of staff remarked the leader “wants to keep on blowing boats up until Venezuela's president cries uncle.”
This suggests the series of strikes may be part of a push to oust Venezuela's sitting leadership.
