As Swimmers Ran From Danger, Viral Image Depicts Rescuer Sprinting ‘Pedal to the Metal’ In the Direction of the Site.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong inhabitant of Bondi, has always considered the famous shoreline as her own backyard. On that fateful Sunday evening, she, like many others in the area, heard cracking sounds ringing out through the neighbourhood.

“We all thought the same, but I considered it was daylight and you couldn't spot any lights,” she explains. Exiting her apartment, she observed people “streaming up Bondi Road”. The faces she saw made it clear something was wrong.

While standing on the street, conversing with a couple who had run up the incline in their swimwear, she became aware of someone approaching from behind. It was a beach patrol officer, dashing to Bondi barefoot from the nearby Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while holding a life-saving kit.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I spotted this streak in blue,” she recounts. “He was just flying past. He was alone heading in the direction that all the others was trying to get away from, while holding that big kit and without footwear … He’s running at something that undoubtedly every part of you would signal you to run in the reverse way.

“Absolutely no pause, but just totally pedal to the metal sprinting.”

An Iconic Image of Courage During Crisis

The photograph Ching captured of the rescuer, now known to be Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as among numerous moments of heroism in the wake of the terror attack.

Andy Reid, a second lifeguard, says that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to assist the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to work with surf lifesavers, police and paramedics treating many victims.

Community Reaction and Assistance

Doolan’s actions was a single example among several to come out of the community, with the beach facility beside the location of the attack transforming into a temporary treatment center. It was shared that fellow lifeguards were also seen helping out, such as going into the ocean to assist people who were struggling.

In the days after the attack, statements of appreciation circulated widely. A social media message expressed appreciation for the individuals who demonstrated that “goodness will always triumph over evil”.

The team of rescuers published a message, explaining they were “still trying to comprehend what transpired”.

“We are grateful all for your kind messages and support. We are touched by the care shown towards our team,” the team commented. “When ready, we will tell our tales in the belief that it aids those impacted.”

Official Commendation

Waverley council, the local authority that oversees many professional beach safety officers, said that the crew acted heroically from the moment the incident commenced right into late that evening.

“We have heard so many powerful stories, but the popular photo of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help preserve life is extraordinary,” said a local official.

“These individuals show selflessness every day in keeping our world-famous shores protected for surfers and swimmers, but what we observed on that evening should be highly praised.

“While we mourn and grapple with the atrocity of this brutal and barbaric act of violence, I think it is vital that we consider just how much positivity we have witnessed in the face of such darkness.”
