Democratic lawmakers Denounce Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Capital Punishment
Lawmakers from the Democratic party expressed fury after the ex-president charged a coalition of Democratic legislators of being "betrayers" and stated they should be taken into custody and punished "with execution" following their release of a disputed video.
The Message That Triggered the Dispute
The recorded message, published on Tuesday, showcases six Democratic elected officials who previously worked in military or defense positions.
"As we did, you all swore an oath to protect and defend this founding document," the officials stated in the 90-second video. "Currently, the threats to our governing document don't only come from overseas, but from domestically. Our regulations are unambiguous, you can reject improper directives, you can decline unlawful commands, you must refuse unlawful commands. No one has to carry out commands that violate the law or our constitution."
The Former President's Angry Response
The clip reportedly prompt a heated reaction from the ex-president.
On the following morning, Trump published on his social media platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional post, he stated: "This is really concerning, and Harmful to our Country. Their comments cannot be permitted to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a additional post, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also reposted a declaration that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Opposition Leaders Answer
Following Trump's statements on that day, Top Democrats released a unified statement censuring the comments.
"Violent politics has no position in the United States," they declared. "Representatives who appeared in the video all served our nation with exceptional national pride and distinction. We strongly denounce Donald Trump's offensive and risky threats of violence against members of Congress, and call on House Republicans to strongly do the same."
The opposition officials also stated that they had been in touch with protective services "to make certain the protection of these representatives and their families."
"Donald Trump must immediately remove these extreme online messages and retract his dangerous rhetoric before he leads to violence," the announcement added.
Representatives' Strong Response
The officials who appeared in the video also released a declaration.
"We serve as veterans and defense specialists who care for this nation and made an vow to defend and support the founding document of the United States," they said. "This commitment lasts a lifetime, and we plan to maintain it. No warning, intimidation, or incitement will stop us from that fundamental responsibility."
"The most revealing aspect is that the ex-president considers it liable to punishment by capital punishment for us to reiterate the legal requirements," they stated. "Military personnel should know that we have their backs as they fulfill their oath to the national charter and responsibility to adhere to only lawful orders. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our responsibility."
They added: "The entire nation must unite and censure the president's calls for our execution and ideological conflict. This is a time for moral clarity."
Further Governmental Responses
The Senate Democratic leader also censured Trump's statements and shared on digital platforms: "It's important to understand: the President of the United States is requesting the execution of government members."
He added: "This is an clear THREAT. Each congressional member, every Representative, the entire nation – without partisan consideration – should condemn this immediately and unconditionally."
The Republican House speaker justified Trump's claim that the Democrats had been involved in "rebellion", characterizing the video as "wildly inappropriate", adding: "This represents very dangerous, you have leading members of Congress telling troops to defy commands, I think that represents unprecedented in American history."
The Conservative representative also allegedly informed the press that in what he read of Trump's posts, Trump was "explaining the violation of rebellion" but that "lawyers have to parse the terminology and decide all that."
White House Statement
During a executive branch meeting on that day, when asked by a reporter, "Does the president want to kill congressional representatives?", the White House press secretary responded: "Certainly not."
"Let's be clear about what the ex-commander in chief is addressing," the representative said. "We see active officials of the federal government who coordinated to arrange a video message to individuals of the US military, to serving soldiers urging them to disobey the president's legal commands."
She said: "The integrity of our defense system rests on the chain of command, and if that system is broken, it can cause casualties, it can result in disorder, and that is exactly what these congressional representatives ... are basically promoting."
