The distinctive yellow-colored apartment block in the background helped us verify the footage.

Our team is analyzing images and video shared earlier today that show the aftermath of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive blast that Russian officials say fatally injured a senior soldier in Moscow.

Russian authorities confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that detonated and that he succumbed of his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing.

Our starting point to verify the site of where the pictures were from relied on social media reports indicating the blast happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.

We used panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to corroborate the unique yellow colour of a adjacent apartment building captured in the footage.

Locating additional structures, streetlights and the road configuration verified the exact location the pictures were taken.

We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the images had not been manipulated.
