Gavin Newsom States He Is Weighing a Presidential Campaign for 2028
Gavin Newsom, a leading Democratic figure, has disclosed that he plans to make a decision about whether to seek the White House in 2028 once the 2026 elections are over.
"Absolutely, it would be dishonest otherwise," the governor commented when pressed about contemplating a presidential run post the 2026 ballots. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I can't do that."
The governor's current term as governor concludes in the start of 2027, and term limits prevent another run. But, he noted that any choice is a long way off.
"It's up to destiny," he said.
Growing Prominence as a Trump Critic
The California governor has emerged as a high-profile opponent of the current federal leadership, using his online platforms and championing a proposition that would boost Democratic congressional seats in response to GOP gerrymandering. This move has drawn criticism from adversaries.
Federal Funding Dispute
Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, accused that Newsom shows no concern about the state's residents in a recent segment on Fox News. Duffy disclosed intentions to withhold taxpayer dollars from California and warned revoking the state's ability to issue trucking licenses.
"I plan to withdraw a significant sum from the state," he stated, after a recently reported fatal crash in the state involving an unauthorized commercial driver that led to three deaths and four injuries.
The governor's team pointed out that the national authorities had approved the worker's status on several occasions, which permitted him to receive a trucking license under U.S. law.
The transportation secretary had earlier indicated he was blocking additional funds from the state for failing to implement English language requirements for commercial drivers.
Pointed Reply from the Administration
"Ex-reality TV personality, now transportation chief, continues to misunderstand federal law," his administration retorted in a last month's statement addressing the funding warnings. "In the meantime, in contrast to this person, we rely on data: The state's commercial driver's license holders had a fatal crash rate significantly lower than the countrywide rate. The state of Texas – the single state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate almost 50% higher than the state. Facts don't lie. This administration is dishonest."
Polling Data and Political Future
A recently conducted survey revealed that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and a significant portion of the electorate indicated that Newsom should run for the White House in the next election cycle. In recent years, his approval ratings has grown to an average of about one-third from around 30%, while his disapproval has dropped from an typical level of previous highs to current figures.
In previous months, the governor commented while visiting several battleground states that he had "uncertainty" about his plans for 2028.
He also referenced his past difficulties, including being identified as dyslexic at the age of five.
"The notion that a individual who had modest test scores, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was always in the back of the classroom – that such a possibility is discussed is, by itself, remarkable," he said. "Who the hell knows? I'm looking forward to who emerges in 2028 and who meets that moment. And that's the question for the voters."
