A popular South African radio and club DJ has been shot dead in the nation's economic hub Johannesburg, sending shockwaves across a country struggling with rampant crime.

Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was shot and killed in the city centre on the afternoon of Tuesday.

Authorities reported the forty-year-old media personality was accosted by three individuals, with one shot at him before running away.

The reason of the shooting is unknown and no suspects have been apprehended have taken place, police said.

The Fatal Incident

Police indicated that Stock was ambushed as he was exiting a location in the vicinity of the Carlton Centre.

He had been present for hours at the site overseeing the implementation of security systems, which had been controversially occupied by squatters, as per local media.

"Authorities believe the man was confronted by three unknown suspects after parking his vehicle, and they shot at him before escaping on foot," authorities said.

CCTV footage showed a man with dreadlocked hair and dressed in what appeared to be a guard's attire opening fire on Stock before running away.

The DJ attempted to flee after he was wounded but succumbed to his injuries on the opposite side of the road.

Officials noted that Stock had an weapon on his person and no items were stolen during the attack.

Important clues, like spent shells, were recovered from the location.

Officials are asking anyone who saw the event who may have witnessed the attack to assist with the investigation.

"Evidence suggests they covered significant ground after the shooting, and police have been attempting to locate them to find their whereabouts," stated a police chief.
