Preparations for Trump-Putin Summit Postponed Days After Hungarian Capital Negotiations Suggested

Currently exist "no plans" for American leader Donald Trump to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin "anytime soon", a administration representative has declared.

Recently the US president stated he and the Kremlin leader would conduct negotiations in Budapest within two weeks to address the Ukraine conflict.

A planning session between America's top diplomat Marco Rubio and his opposite number Sergei Lavrov was due to be held recently - but the administration stated the two had had a "productive" conversation and that a face-to-face session was no longer "required".

The administration withheld further information on the reason the negotiations had been put on hold.

Earlier Events

The US president had raised the possibility of a Budapest summit over the phone with Putin, a just prior to meeting Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky in the White House.

Various sources indicated his meeting with the Ukrainian leader had been a "shouting match", with sources claiming Trump had pressured him to relinquish extensive regions of Ukraine's east as part of a settlement with Moscow.

However, on this week the American president embraced a peace initiative supported by Kyiv and European leaders to halt the war on the current front line.

"Leave it as is where it stands," he stated.

Moscow has consistently objected against freezing the existing front lines.

Moscow was only interested in "enduring stability", Russia's foreign minister said on Tuesday, implying that freezing the front line would only amount to a short-term truce.

Political Perspectives

The "underlying reasons" of the hostilities demanded attention, Lavrov stated, using Russian diplomatic language for a range of extensive requirements that involve the recognition of full Russian sovereignty over the eastern region as well as the military reduction of the country – a unacceptable proposition for Kyiv and its Western allies.

Zelensky stated talks regarding the front line were the "commencement of dialogue" but that Russia was "employing all tactics" to evade negotiations.

He further commented the only topic that could cause Russia to "take notice" was that of the delivery of distance-capable munitions to the Ukrainian military.

Military Considerations

Putin's unscheduled call with the US leader last Thursday came ahead of speculation that the United States was considering delivering long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine that could possibly hit deep into Russia.

Zelensky said it was the missile discussion that had forced Russia to enter into dialogue. The discussion regarding the weapons systems had emerged as a "significant input" in negotiations", he remarked.
