Space Traveler Shares Depression After ‘Tsunami of Backlash Post-Spaceflight
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her battle with depression after being subjected to a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space earlier this year, which also included high-profile passengers.
The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who questioned its cost and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a public message, recalling a phone call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the journey.
She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on female health science and operated research during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – including her scientific research and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her roots – was drowned out under the deluge of gendered attacks.
She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work championing the cause of survivors of assault.
Her own goal of reaching space was paused after surviving a rape during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.
A Path to Recovery
In the time since reaching space, she reports that the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she acknowledged the well-wishers whose support pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she said.
She noted that even with the backlash, significant positive outcomes had resulted from the experience, such as increased focus on her scientific work and platforms for her activism.
Flight Details
The fully automated spacecraft departed Texas in April, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the Kármán line of outer space.
The team of pioneers also featured leaders in various fields.
The company behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company founded by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
