The New Mayor Vows a 'New Era' for NYC in Inaugural Address
During an initial day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” the metropolis, declaring “a different age” and an ambitious beginning to his term.
An Unprecedented Leader
The 34-year-old figure, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.
“A opportunity of this kind is rare and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hold the levers of change,” Mamdani added.
Ignoring suggestions to lower expectations, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will govern with courage and vision.”
Governing with Democratic Socialist Ideals
Mamdani explicitly affirmed his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not compromise my principles for fear of being called radical,” he said to loud cheers.
The swearing-in was a two-part event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's ascent as a victory over powerful interests.
A Sweeping Policy Agenda
Mamdani now begins one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:
- Free childcare
- No-cost bus transit
- A rent freeze for approximately 1 million households
- A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores
The estimated $10 billion expense of these programs may be challenging to finance. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Managing External Dynamics

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's public safety record, pointing to historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with murders reported.
As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani ended his address with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
