The former personal attorney for Donald Trump has stepped down as the US Attorney for New Jersey. This comes after a judicial decision that questioned her right to serve.

Official Departure

The nation's top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, accepted her stepping down on Monday. Bondi stated that the court's "flawed" ruling made it "untenable" for Habba to effectively run her office.

"But do not mistake adherence to the ruling as defeat," she declared. "This battle will now stretch across the nation."

Judicial Challenge

The departure follows closely on a US appeals court found that she had been serving in violation of the law as US attorney. This ruling is likely to affect many legal proceedings in the state.

The judicial panel declared that a interim role that did not receive confirmation by the US Senate violated the federal law governing appointments.

Ongoing Legal Battle

It was also stated that the former prosecutor will continue working within the justice department as a high-level advisor. She will seek further review of the ruling, in the hope of achieving a overturned decision.

On a social media platform, she wrote that judges "should not be able to second-guess the President's choice of prosecutors tasked with executing the primary duty of the administration of prosecuting crime."

Accomplishments Cited

Bondi commended her tenure and pointed out that while she was in charge, the city of Newark saw a 20% reduction in offenses. Additionally that the city of Camden recorded its initial homicide-free summer since 1974 free from homicides.

Background and Previous Role

Habba, originally became part of the former president's legal defense in 2021. She later defended the former president in his hush-money trial in New York last year, leading to his guilty verdict on dozens of charges of falsifying business records.

Earlier, assuming the top New Jersey post, the former president had stated he was selecting her as his senior adviser if re-elected, labeling Habba as "unwavering in her loyalty" and a "tireless advocate for justice".
