Both ships named Friendship and Tigger Moth set off from Quintana Roo on March 20th.

A large-scale search and rescue effort is currently under way in the Caribbean waters for a duo of lost sailing vessels carrying humanitarian supplies journeying from Mexico to the island of Cuba.

Naval Search Efforts Deployed

Mexico has deployed naval teams and reconnaissance aircraft to locate the two vessels, which were had on board at least 9 crew members, per a official statement.

The vessels had been expected to arrive in the Cuban capital on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been radio silence from them and zero verification of their safe arrival, the navy said.

The Situation of Humanitarian Support to the Island

The Caribbean nation has leaned on aid convoys from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the island grapples with widespread power outages across the country.

"Both skippers and their teams are veteran seafarers, and both vessels are fitted with appropriate safety systems and signalling equipment," a representative involved in the effort said.

The nine crew members are nationals of Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Mexican authorities said it has opened communications with coast guard agencies from those nations along with their consular staff.

"The group is working closely with the relevant authorities and are still optimistic in the crews' ability to safely arrive in Havana," the spokesperson added.

Previous Aid Mission

Just days before, the Cuban government warmly welcomed and warmly received another boat that had transported 14 tonnes of donated goods to the island.

That boat, nicknamed "a modern Granma" after the boat in which Fidel Castro came back to Cuba to start the armed struggle in the mid-20th century, delivered photovoltaic panels, drugs, formula milk, bikes and provisions.

Larger Political Climate

Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have primarily led attempts to ship critical assistance to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, a period which saw a oil sanctions on the Communist-run nation was initiated.

The United Nations have since warned of "dire" supply shortages, with more than fifty thousand operations postponed in Cuba due to energy rationing.

Political measures have been ramped up lately, with comments from different leaders emphasizing the delicate situation regarding diplomatic ties.

In response to previous comments, a high-ranking Cuban official stated firmly that "the governance model of Cuba is not subject to discussion."

Reports suggest that early stages of negotiations were initiated, although their current progress remains not publicly known.

The maritime authorities stated it was pledged to using every available asset at its disposal to find the vessels and guarantee the well-being of the crews.

As of now, there has been no public statement on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban leadership.
